What is cod liver oil?

As the name suggests, cod liver oil is extracted from the livers of Atlantic cod, refined and then bottled, and it has been used for centuries for its medicinal properties. In the 1800s it was given to children to prevent rickets caused by vitamin D deficiency, while after World War II the Ministry of Food distributed cod liver oil to ensure adults and children were getting enough vitamins A and D during rationing.

Healthspan's cod liver oil is sustainably sourced from the clean, crisp waters off Greenland, and all the oil in its capsules has been granted Friend of the Sea certification. This certification is important, as it shows that Healthspan's sourcing processes respect and protect the marine environment. Healthspan's cod liver oil is also refined to keep it pure, and it's virtually taste- and odour-free.

What is cod liver oil good for?

Cod liver oil is rich in the omega 3 fatty acids DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), as well as the fat-soluble vitamins A and D. DHA and EPA provide health benefits for the brain, heart and eyes, by contributing to the maintenance of normal blood pressure and blood triglyceride levels, brain function and vision. Omega 3 fatty acids also contribute to the normal functioning of the immune system.

Vitamin A is an antioxidant that contributes to the maintenance of healthy bones, teeth, nails and hair. It also helps to maintain healthy vision, and is needed for the production of the light-sensitive pigment rhodopsin. Vitamin D is also important for the maintenance of healthy teeth and bones, as it regulates the body's absorption of calcium. Both vitamin D and A are also vital for maintaining a healthy immune system. Read more about the benefits of cod liver oil.

Cod liver oil supplements

Healthspan offers a range of cod liver oil supplements of different strengths, all containing sustainably sourced oil.

Cod liver oil capsules

Healthspan has three different strengths of cod liver oil capsules available, which all come in small, citrus-flavoured capsules that are easy to swallow. Our Super Strength Cod Liver Oil 1200mg is one of the highest-strength cod liver oil supplements available in the UK. Healthspan also offers High Strength Cod Liver Oil 1000mg, which is available in packs of 120 or 240, as well as High Strength Cod Liver Oil 570mg (180 or 360 capsules).

Cod liver oil liquid

Healthspan also sells Moller's Omega 3 Cod Liver Oil Liquid (250ml). Moller's is a Norwegian brand, and its cod liver oil is made using sustainably sourced Arctic cod from the waters of Northern Norway. Cod liver oil liquid is ideal for people who don't like swallowing capsules, and Moller's oil is enhanced with lemon flavouring for a superior taste.

Do you need to take cod liver oil?

The UK's Food Standards Agency recommends a minimum of two portions of fish per week – one of those being oily fish – which equates to 450 micrograms per day of long-chain omega 3 fatty acids. Cod liver oil is a great option for people who don't get enough fish in their diet. A lack of omega 3 fatty acids can lead to dry skin and eyes, mood changes and joint pain and stiffness.

Pregnant women should not take cod liver oil as excess vitamin A can be harmful to a developing baby. If you are on medication, always check with a doctor before starting a new supplement. Do not take cod liver oil if you are allergic to fish.

Those who are pregnant or don't eat fish should consider a vegan omega 3 product, such as Healthspan's Veg-Omega 3 1000mg.
