Why support urinary and bladder health?

We often don't think about our bladder health until a problem arises, but it's an important organ that does an important job. Some people suffer from recurrent UTIs throughout their life, while others will never experience one. Certain bladder issues may be linked with ageing and childbirth, so supplements and a healthy lifestyle may help to prevent or alleviate these issues.

How to avoid poor urinary tract health

There are lifestyle and dietary choices you can make to maintain a healthy urinary tract. Drinking enough water, staying active and managing stress are all important. Eat a diet rich in fibrous foods such as fruit, vegetables, pulses, nuts and seeds, and, if necessary, avoid potential bladder irritants, such as alcohol, caffeine, citrus fruits, acidic foods and sugar. It's also important that you avoid holding in your urine, and go to the toilet when you need to.

What to do if you have a urinary tract infection

UTIs occur when bacteria (or sometimes fungi) enter the urethra and urinary tract. When the microbes affect the lower urinary tract, it's called a bladder infection (cystitis), but if the microbes reach the upper urinary tract, it's a kidney infection (which is a medical emergency). Symptoms include pain or burning when urinating, a frequent need to urinate, dark or cloudy urine or blood in the urine, and abdominal pain. A fever, nausea or vomiting, and pain in the upper back indicate a kidney infection.

Antibiotics are usually prescribed for a UTI, but drinking plenty of water and taking certain supplements may also help.

Urinary tract supplements

Cranberry is well known to help prevent UTIs – it contains compounds (proanthocyanidins) that prevent bacteria from sticking to the walls of the urinary tract. Healthspan offers two cranberry supplements: Cranberry (120 tablets), which contains the equivalent of 10,000mg of fresh cranberries, and Super Strength Cranberry (60 capsules), which contains the equivalent of 25,000mg of fresh cranberries. Both supplements are vegan and contain added vitamin C for extra immune health support. They are also manufactured using a 100% natural process that is free from chemicals or solvents.

Common bladder problems

As well as UTIs, other common bladder problems include overactive bladder (urgency incontinence), stress incontinence (leaking urine when you laugh, cough or exercise) and nocturia (frequent night-time urination.) Women may experience some of these problems as they age and after menopause. Many women also experience stress incontinence after childbirth.

Men can also experience bladder problems, particularly as they age. This is often caused by an enlarged prostate.

How to support bladder health

As previously mentioned, bladder health can be supported by a healthy diet and lifestyle. Certain supplements, such as cranberry extract, can also help, particularly in preventing UTIs. Read more about supporting overall bladder health.

Nocturia becomes more common as we age (it's the most common urinary symptom among men), and can significantly disrupt sleep. Read more about nocturia.

Healthspan's Bladder Support with Go-Less (60 capsules) specifically addresses bladder health and urinary flow, reducing the amount of night-time urination and leading to a better night's sleep. Each capsule contains 300mg of Go-Less, a natural ingredient that contains extracts of pumpkin seed and soy germ, both of which have been shown to reduce symptoms associated with an overactive bladder.1
